Behind the Blooms is an Illustrated Zine about the symbolism and history of gifting flowers. Having worked as a florist over the summer, I developed a deep interest in and knowledge of flowers. Combining that with my love of history led me to research Victorian Era Floriography.

Floriography is the hidden language of flowers. In the Victorian Era, high society used a single stem or bouquet to convey a message silently. To translate the messages, dictionaries of flowers were often found in 1800s homes. I liked the idea of bringing that concept into the modern era in a straightforward colorful way almost reminiscent of an illustrated children's book.
In my research, I found that flowers have symbolism all over the world, and while the meanings may vary the idea of conveying a message through flowers is a universal idea.
Overall I'm very proud of this piece. It was a step outside my comfort zone as it was my first exploration into digital illustration but it allowed me the opportunity to grow and explore a new aspect of design.
